Common issues when connecting an existing custom domains
When troubleshooting issues with custom domains connected to your Mixo site, here are some useful tips to help you resolve common problems effectively:
-
Check DNS Record Accuracy: Ensure that the DNS records you’ve entered in your domain registrar’s control panel exactly match the DNS settings provided by Mixo. Any discrepancies in CNAME or TXT records can prevent your domain from connecting properly. Double-check that you’ve entered the data correctly, including no trailing dots (unless specified) or spaces.
-
Verify Domain Propagation: After updating DNS settings, it usually takes some time for changes to propagate across the internet. This can take up to 48 hours. You can use tools like DNS Checker to check if your DNS changes have fully propagated. Enter your domain name and select the record type you’ve updated to see if the changes are recognized globally.
-
Ensure Domain is Not Expired: Check with your domain registrar to ensure your domain has not expired. An expired domain can cause connection issues and make your site inaccessible. Keeping your domain registration active is crucial for maintaining access.
-
Check for CAA Records: If the TXT verification record continually does not work, it may be due to CAA records set in your DNS configuration that are preventing Mixo from issuing an SSL certificate. CAA (Certification Authority Authorization) DNS records are like a special set of rules that tell your website domain which companies are allowed to issue security certificates for your site.
Contact your domain registrar to ensure there are no CAA records set in your DNS configuration that might be preventing Mixo from issuing an SSL certificate. If there are CAA records set, you can remove them or add a CAA record that allows Mixo to issue an SSL certificate:
- Log in to your domain provider, navigate to the DNS and add the following record: Type: CAA Data: 0 issue “pki.goog”
Once you have waited for changes to propagate (may take 24 hours or so), you will need to revisit your domain settings on Mixo. You should not get a new TXT _acme-challenge.www record to add to your DNS. Note: you can also reset your domain settings back to default and then add them again
-
Contact Support: If you’ve gone through all the above steps and still encounter issues, don’t hesitate to reach out to Mixo’s support team or your domain registrar’s support. Sometimes the issue might be on their end or there could be additional steps or verifications required that are specific to your registrar.
